Box Office 2025: Chhaava’s Historic ₹600 Cr Run, Saiyaara’s Pre-Booking

1. Chhaava – ₹807.88 crore - Chhaava was the powerful story of a brave hero, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the valiant son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. After Shivaji’s death in 1680, the
Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, played by Akshaye Khanna, and his court rejoiced,
believing their fiercest enemy was gone. Confident and emboldened, they
dreamed of capturing the Deccan region. But their joy was short-lived when
Sambhaji Maharaj, portrayed by Vicky Kaushal, delivered a stunning blow—
raiding Burhanpur and looting the Mughal treasury. Enraged, Aurangzeb swore
revenge. Anticipating a Mughal retaliation, Sambhaji made strategic
preparations to protect his kingdom. However, what he did not foresee was the
betrayal within his own family—internal politics that made it easier for
Aurangzeb to advance. What followed was a gripping tale of war, sacrifice, and
the unwavering spirit of a leader who refused to surrender. ##
Chhaava had not only captivated audiences but also rewritten the box office
record books. With a staggering ₹600.10 crore at the domestic box office, it
became Vicky Kaushal’s highest-grossing film to date, surpassing all his
previous works and reaffirming his status as one of the most bankable stars of
his generation. The film entered Bollywood’s most elite league, becoming only
the fourth Indian film to cross the ₹600 crore mark domestically, joining the
ranks of Pushpa 2: The Rule, Jawan, and Stree 2. ##
This historic success also marked a milestone for Rashmika Mandanna, who
etched her name in box office history. With Chhaava crossing ₹500 crore, she
became the only actress with three consecutive blockbusters crossing the
₹500 crore mark. Her previous two hits—Animal and Pushpa 2: The Rule -
combined with Chhaava, completed a unique and unmatched hat-trick,
cementing her position as one of the most formidable stars in Indian cinema.
Chhaava was not just a film—it was a cinematic triumph that blended legacy,
valour, and mass appeal into an unforgettable experience.##
2. Saiyaara – ₹512crore - Saiyaara was a film of many firsts—it marked the much-anticipated acting debut of Ahaan Panday, the first collaboration between acclaimed director Mohit Suri
and Yash Raj Films (YRF), and also the producing debut of Akshaye Widhani.
Moreover, it held the distinction of being the first YRF theatrical release with
Netflix as its official OTT partner. ##
The story revolved around Vaani Batra (Aneet Padda), a closet poet
heartbroken after being abandoned at the altar, who later crossed paths with
Krish Kapoor (Ahaan Panday), an aspiring singer with a temper and a passion
for music. When Krish read one of Vaani’s poems, he was mesmerised and
invited her to write lyrics for his songs. As they worked together, love
blossomed, but their relationship faced unexpected challenges, forming the
emotional core of the narrative. ##
In what could only be described as a spectacular dream run, Saiyaara crossed
the ₹500-crore mark at the worldwide box office within just 18 days of its
theatrical release, firmly establishing itself as one of the year’s biggest
successes. Starring debutant Ahaan Panday alongside Aneet Padda, the
romantic action drama became the second film of 2025 to enter the elite ₹500
Crore club, following the record-breaking Chhaava. Saiyaara also made
headlines for its massive pre-release buzz, emerging as the highest pre-booked film among several top titles. Saiyaara had registered the highest number of pre-bookings. At that time, it ranked 28th among the top booking grossers at MovieMax. ##

from the Rs. 99 offer), Fighter (2,850 tickets), Sikandar (3,700 tickets), Kalki
2898 AD (5,100 tickets), Dunki (6,300 tickets), Brahmastra (6,500 tickets),
Singham Again (7,000 tickets), Jawan (17,500 tickets), Animal (18,600 tickets),
Stree 2 (21,870 tickets), Chhaava (21,900 tickets), and Pushpa 2 – The Rule
(22,500 tickets). Meanwhile, Saiyaara had surpassed prominent films like Rocky
Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (1,400 tickets), Sitaare Zameen Par (1,262 tickets),
Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1,175 tickets), and Kesari Chapter 2 (1,146 tickets).##
Housefull 5– ₹288.58 crore - Akshay Kumar’s madcap entertainer Housefull 5 stormed into cinemas with an explosive start, collecting ₹24.35 crore on its opening day. This thunderous
debut rewrote the franchise’s record books, surpassing all previous
instalments by a wide margin. The journey had begun with Housefull (2010) at
₹10 crore, followed by Housefull 2 (2012) at ₹14 crore, Housefull 3 (2016) at
₹15.21 crore, and Housefull 4 (2019) at ₹16.50 crore—making the fifth chapter
the undisputed champion of the series and another box-office triumph for
Akshay Kumar. ##The film also achieved good success globally, becoming
Akshay Kumar’s widest international release. It played in over 85 countries,
reached more than 1,300 venues, and ran on over 2,000 screens worldwide—a
new benchmark for both the star and the franchise that reflected its massive
global appeal. The story unfolds on a luxury cruise owned by Ranjeet Dobriyal,
Britain’s seventh-richest man, during his 100th birthday celebration. After
Ranjeet’s sudden death, his will names a son from his first marriage—Jolly—as
heir. Chaos erupts when three different men claim to be Jolly, each with a wife
in tow. A DNA test is planned, but a night of wild partying ends with the murder
of a doctor. Two quirky detectives board the ship to unravel the mystery,
leading to a storm of mistaken identities, comic twists, and revelations on the
high seas.##

Sitaare Zameen Par – ₹267.34 crore - Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par was a heartfelt Hindi drama directed by RS Prasanna and starred Aamir Khan alongside Genelia Deshmukh,
marking her much-anticipated comeback after 13 years. The film brought
together a talented ensemble cast in a story that blended emotional depth with
an inspiring message, while also breaking new ground in accessibility, making it
a cinematic experience for audiences of all abilities.
In the last quarter of the millennium, ‘mainstream’ Hindi cinema had evolved to
mean far more than standard (and sometimes substandard) entertainers. A
growing segment of these films focused on stories—mostly fictional—about
people with medical afflictions and disabilities. ##
Just recently, audiences had
seen the sensitive Tanvi—The Great, which explored autism with depth and
compassion. For films built around such themes, disabilities needed to be portrayed in a positive and wholesomely compassionate light—avoiding
frivolity, as seen in Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan (on blindness), or the kind of
opportunistic, artificially convenient depiction found in Saiyaara. The balance
needed to ensure that the ‘entertainment quotient’ worked in harmony with the
‘emotional quotient’ and, importantly, the ‘intelligence quotient’. ##
Encouragingly, most films in this space had not only succeeded commercially
but had also enhanced awareness, understanding, and acceptance of
individuals facing such challenges. Marking a significant moment in this
movement was Genelia Deshmukh’s return to cinema after 13 years in Sitaare
Zameen Par, produced by Aamir Khan. In a groundbreaking achievement for
global cinema, the film became the first in the world to feature all major
accessibility features—closed captions, audio description, and Indian Sign
Language—ensuring that audiences with visual, hearing, or speech impairments
could experience it with dignity and independence.##
This heartfelt drama had a strong start, opening to ₹10.50 crore on Day 1,
followed by an impressive overseas opening weekend collection of 3.10 million
USD (₹26.83 crore), underscoring that films with both emotional depth and
inclusive vision resonated powerfully across borders.##
Raid 2 – ₹237 crore - Starring Ajay Devgn, Riteish Deshmukh, Vaani Kapoor, and Rajat Kapoor, and
directed by Raj Kumar Gupta, Raid 2 emerged as the 42nd success and 17th hit
for Ajay Devgn. The movie followed Income Tax Officer Amay Patnaik in 1989 as
he was transferred to Bhoj after a controversial raid in Jaipur. There, he
confronted influential cabinet minister Manohar Dhankar, aka Dada Bhai, a
revered figure who was secretly steeped in corruption. Determined to expose
him, Amay launched a massive raid, only to find nothing, forcing him to change
tactics against his shrewdest opponent yet. What followed was a gripping
battle of wits, strategy, and perseverance to bring the untouchable politician to
justice. The movie was released on Netflix on June 26 and received a strong
audience response for its gripping drama and performances. However, Raid 2
It couldn’t impress much compared to its predecessor. ##
In the end, this season proved to be a milestone period for Indian cinema, with
each film carving its mark at the box office. Chhaava emerged as the
undisputed champion, not just for its gripping portrayal of Chhatrapati Sambhaji
Maharaj but also for rewriting history with over ₹600 crore domestically and
cementing Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna’s records. Saiyaara made
waves with its exceptional pre-booking numbers, holding its own against major
blockbusters and delivering a solid opening that justified the early hype. Sitaare
Zameen Par, Raid 2, and Housefull 5 also had their moments—drawing in
crowds with their unique appeal and contributing to a vibrant, competitive box
office. Together, these films demonstrated the diversity of storytelling and star power
in today’s industry—proving that whether it’s historical grandeur, high-octane
thrillers, or light-hearted entertainers, audiences are willing to show up in
